Simone said he’s been assured that Syn will not try to be a club like Seven. Rick Simone, the executive director of the Federal Hill Commerce Association, said he had met with Alkhiamy and had a phone conversation about the association’s concerns on any new nightlife going in there, especially after the experience with Seven. It’s an acronym for Alkhiamy and his brothers’ names. He also took out speakers that had blasted music into an alleyway, which had contributed to its predecessor’s noise problems.Īnd lest anyone think that the name Syn portends trouble, Hemond told the Board of Licenses that it’s not a pun. People will sit in booths and enjoy Middle Eastern food, not stand around a crowded dance floor bumping into each other.

Syn will have a more upscale dress code than its predecessor, Alkhiamy said at a Board of Licenses meeting on Feb. He grew up in Johnston and has a business-management degree from West Virginia University, and also has experience in the convenience store, automotive and commercial fishing industries. This is Alkhiamy’s first foray into the nightlife businesses.

The Board of Licenses has a new policy that businesses must be in operation for a year before they can get a license allowing them to stay open until 2 a.m., Hemond said.
It’s now licensed to operate until 1 a.m., but from Sunday to Thursday it will close at midnight for the first 60 days of business, Hemond said. It could have pursued transferring Club Seven’s old licenses, but decided to get new ones. Syn is focused on starting fresh and being a good neighbor, Hemond said. The Board of Licenses had tried to shutter it permanently, a decision that was reversed by the state Department of Business Regulation after arguments from Hemond, who also represented Seven, that there was no connection between Stephen Cabral’s tragic murder and the club itself.īut the owner of Club Seven let the licenses lapse and exited the business anyway.Ĭlub Seven also came under regulatory scrutiny after a gang-related shooting in May injured two people who were leaving the club.īeyond those two instances of violence, neighbors fumed about Seven’s throbbing noise, rowdy patrons and apparently indifferent management. Its predecessor, Club Seven, closed after a group of its patrons beat and fatally stabbed a fellow patron in a nearby Walgreens parking lot last summer. Alkhiamy wants to open “as soon as possible,” Hemond said Thursday. It’s not clear when the business will open - it still had inspection hurdles to clear - but already its signs are hanging outside. It also got a license for tobacco and food sales in December. Syn was approved for its liquor license at a Board of Licenses meeting last week.
